About Us

In Search of Reason is a tutoring team run by Mr and Mrs Wong. It specialises in teaching Economics, English and Mathematics.

At In Search of Reason, we:

Focus on helping students see and appreciate the rationale behind concepts and ideas they encounter. As compared to formulaic prescription, we believe this approach better helps students internalise and apply their learning.

Identify students’ strengths and adapt our teaching methods to play to their strengths.

Break down complex concepts and ideas into bite-sized morsels for gradual absorption.

In the area of Mathematics, we:

Employ different ways to explain one same concept, where required. We also encourage students to verbalise their own reasoning.

Start with basic examples before working towards exam-level questions and beyond. We believe small successes will build up students’ confidence for tackling more difficult problems.

In the area of Economics and English, we:

Train students to write clearly, simply, and concisely. We prescribe the use of the active voice as opposed to the passive voice.

Expose students to various fields of knowledge. We also show how seemingly isolated fields of knowledge may relate to each other to form logical arguments.

Students' Feedback

Our students come from a variety of local and international schools including National University of Singapore (NUS), Raffles Institution, Hwa Chong Institution, National Junior College, Singapore Chinese Girls School, ACS (Independent), SJI (International), Tanglin Trust School, United World College (UWC), Singapore American School (SAS), Australian International School as well as boarding schools in the UK and US.

Below are some comments from our students:

“Mr Wong began tutoring me in Higher Level Math six weeks before IB exams, my grade back then was 5 (out of 7) and I had several conceptual errors in statistics, areas and volumes of revolution. Before he began teaching me, I always believed that my inability to score was due to a lack of practice but when he began tutoring me, he was quick to point out that it was actually a product of poor time management and gaps in my understanding of the topic. He quickly taught me the required topics and also went the extra mile to source for and compile questions for the topics in which I had difficulties in. Mr Wong’s explanations and grasp of the subject matter are excellent and he truly made math enjoyable to learn. I am greatly indebted to him for helping me to achieve a 7 in my IBDP exam.”

- Student from ACS(I), who went on to score 45 (out of 45) for the IB, 2400 (out of 2400) for the SAT and is now studying at a top US university

“Mr Wong is not contented with solving the problem. He always strives to find the best and most effective way to solve a Math problem, allowing the student not just to do well in Math, but to do extraordinarily. I wasn't very good in Math previously, but after Mr Wong taught me, my Math improved by leaps and bounds.”

- Student from Hwa Chong Institution, now studying at a top US university

“I looked forward to class with Mrs Wong every Thursday evening as she would expose me to a variety of perspectives on any issue. She motivated me to think deeply on a topic and showed me how I could come up with more sophisticated arguments. I was always excited to share what I had learnt in class with my friend the next day.”

- PSC Scholar currently studying at the London School of Economics

“I had gone to Mrs Wong for help with SAT Writing and for application to universities to the US and UK. As a science student that had gone through two years of national service, I had little writing practice and found the essay section for the SAT very challenging. Mrs Wong taught me an easy-to-follow essay structure that I could use every time. This helped me score full marks for the essay section, which I previously thought was impossible. Mrs Wong also reviewed my CCA records and testimonials. She picked useful bits of my past record out and gave good advice as to how I could craft my personal statement and essays to ensure that I stood out.”

- Student who gained admission into Cambridge University and Columbia University
